Brief Introduction Brief Introduction

Dr. Wang Hao, born in August 1953 in Beijing, is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an engineer at professorial level, Ph.D. supervisor in China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) and has been privileged to enjoy the Special Allowance from the State Council of P. R. China since 1994. He is now Director of State Key Laboratory of Simulation and Regulation of Water Cycles in River Basin and Honorary Director of Department of Water Resources, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), and Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Wuhan University, Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, China University of Geosciences and so on. He also serves concurrently as Secretary-General of Global Water Partnership-China (GWP-China), a member of National Environmental Advisory Committee, a member of the Science & Technology Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), a member of the Science & Technology Committee of National Forestry Administration, Deputy Director of the Research Society of Technological  Innovation Methods, Deputy Director of China Society of Natural Resources, Managing Director of China Society of Sustainable Development and Director of the Sub-Committee on Water Issues, Executive Director of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES) and Deputy Director of its Committee on Hydrology, Executive Director of China Society of Forestry,Director of Special Task Force on Water Issues-Chinese Society for Sustainable Development (CSSD).

Dr. Wang has been engaged in research on hydrology and water resources for more than 30 years. He participated in the National Seventh Five-Year-Plan key project (from Year 1986- Year 1990), and was in charge of the completion of one key project/special subject on scientific and technical research for the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Five-Year-Plan, one key fundamental study project on the national development plan under the High-tech Program Adopted in March 1997, three key projects financed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), one special project of National Social Public Welfare Research, and one project of National Action Plan for Western Areas. He participated in National Medium and Long-term Development Planning, Integrated Planning of National Water Resources and many other national planning projects and over ten consulting projects at provincial level. He has been Chief Scientist of National High-tech Program since March 1997, team leader of the innovation foundation of NSFC. He is responsible for three National Scientific and Technological Support Planning Projects for the Eleventh Five-Year-Plan.

Being engaged in many important fundamental research and planning projects, Dr. Wang has achieved a lot in the field of simulation of water cycle processes in river basin; evaluation, planning, allocation and scheduling of water resources; theory and calculating methodology for ecological water requirements; theory and practice of water price; water resources management; and development of a water-conservation-oriented society. All of these have holistically formed a kind of theoretical and methodological system for the scientific allocation of river basin water resources adaptable to China’s conditions, including the following three aspects of theory and methodology: 1) water cycle process simulation and water resources assessment at watershed scale that take into account of both of environmental factors and anthropogenic influences; 2) theory and methodology for rational allocation of water resources; and 3) theory and methodology for multi-dimensional regulation and control of water resources. This theoretical and methodological development has helped promote water resources research in China. Meanwhile, it has also been practiced and applied in planning at national, watershed and regional levels, and has attained remarkable social, economic and environmental benefits. In summary, Dr. Wang has made significant contributions both in raising the overall level of water resources research and in helping enhance national economic development.

To date, Dr. Wang has won one in 1st place and five in 2nd places of National Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement in Science & Technology, and 9 ministerial and provincial awards. He has also won a number of national and ministerial honorable titles and credentials.
