During the planning stage of South-to-North Water Diversion Project, Dr. WANG Hao proposed the theory of "three balance analysis" in line with characteristics of multi-source, multi-user, multi-stage, and multi-decision making subject. He systematically demonstrated water resources allocation and the overall layout, and offered his suggestion of the rational diverted wateramount as 9.2 ~ 10.1 billion m3 for the phase-I midline, a major decision-making yardstick for all relevant experts to finally determine the water amount as 9.5billion m3. During the construction and operation stage, Dr. WANG Hao, in the light of problems existing in this most complicated water diversion project in the world (difficulties embodied in such aspects as 1,432-km-long midline along six provinces, 19 cities and 105 counties, including 27 large and medium-sized reservoirs, 88 bifurcation gates, 61 gate bridge bleeders, and 53 escapes), revealed the coupling mechanism of water quantity and quality, put forward the theory of closed-loop risk control and scheduling, and developed the decision support system to combine normal and emergency water diversion. All his research results and technical suggestions have been widely applied in the operation, scheduling and management of the water diversion project, contributing a lot to efficient and safe utilization of water resources.
